Role:

As one of the world’s largest semi conductor companies, ST MICROELECTRONICS acts as X-TREME 6G’s pivotal force, and assists all of the project partners in the realization and delivery of their tasks, with the ultimate goal of building a microelectronics lighthouse in Europe, in respect of sustainable principles, with a strong committment to innovation.

In 2024, more than 50 000 employees worked for ST MICROELECTRONICS, among which 9500 in research and development, across five continents.

Role:

Nokia is honoured to act as the innovation manager of the X-TREME 6G project.

While Nokia Italy will essentially contribute to X-TREME 6G’s activities related to architecture and use cases such as wireless backhauling and network as a sensor; Nokia France will focus its efforts on D-Band and H-Band transceivers design including RFIC designs for 6G applications as wireless transmission and Integrated Communication and Sensing.

Role:

As a joint lab between Nokia, Thales and CEA, and composed of 120 researchers, III-V Lab operates from Paris-Saclay (Palaiseau) and from Grenoble. Its expertise focuses on epitaxy, wafer processing, design and modeling, characterization, test and measurement, and advanced packaging, including heterogeneous integration of III-V components on silicon wafers.

Role:

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in short KIT, combines major Helmhotz research infrastructure with the university environment and a long tradition and history, making it one of the largest research centers in Europe.

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology “creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is the objective to make significant contributions to the global challenges in the fields of energy, mobility, and information”. KIT’s Institute of Radio Frequency Engineering and Electronics will bring a significant contribution to X-TREME 6G’s advancements, with specific efforts on the exploration of densely integrated multi-channel millimeter-wave systems, as well as IC design and packaging.

As a contributor to Germany’s Open6Ghub project, KIT will also be able to Integrate X-TREME 6G into its open test bed, which is developed within this national framework, highlighting X-TREME 6G’s potential for interconnectivity and knowlege transfer with similar projects led in Europe.

Role:

Part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Fraunhofer IZM specializes in applied and industrial contract research. Fraunhofer IZM’s focus is on packaging technology and the integration of multifunctional electronics into systems.

The institute has a staff of more than 400 and saw a turnover of 42.3 million euros in 2023, of which 75% was earned through contract research.

In X-TREME 6G, Fraunhofer IZM’s role will focus on the design of system integration, demonstrators, interconnections, radio frequency signal paths and antenna array. Additionally, Fraunhofer IZM’s will also take part in the fabrication of the project’s millimetter wave modules, and contribute to 6G module standardization.

Role:

With joy and passion, IMST has been combining its in-depth expertise in microwave technologies, wireless communication, antenna- and chip design since 1992 to shape a radiant future together with partners.

IMST’s enthusiasm for high-frequency technologies and state-of-the-art electronics drives them to search for new solutions to shape the future.

For several years now, IMST GmbH has been working intensively on new 6G technologies in a variety of national and international projects. From antenna design and chip development to baseband signal processing. As a system house for radio system solutions, the company has always successfully offered development services for our customers.

Role:

As part of the Orange Group, Orange Polska is Poland’s main telecommunications operator, and provides services to millions “Polish consumers and businesses with the best quality high-speed networks and an unrivaled customer experience”.

In X-TREME 6G, Orange Polska’s contribution will focus on Network as a Sensor, and on data processing and labeling.

Role:

CEA-Leti, a technology research institute at CEA, is a global leader in miniaturization technologies enabling smart, energy-efficient and secure solutions for industry. Founded in 1967, CEA-Leti pioneers micro-& nanotechnologies, tailoring differentiating applicative solutions for global companies, SMEs and startups. CEA-Leti tackles critical challenges in healthcare, energy and digital migration.

CEA has a key role in transferring scientific knowledge and innovation from research to industry. This high-level technological research is carried out in particular in electronic and integrated systems, from microscale to nanoscale. It has a wide range of industrial applications in the fields of transport, health, safety and telecommunications, contributing to the creation of high-quality and competitive products.

Role:

IMS Laboratory is affiliated to three prestigious french entities – Université de Bordeaux, Bordeaux INP, and CNRS.

With more than 400 employees, IMS counts for the most innovative and dynamic laboratory for information and telecommunications technology.

In X-TREME 6G, IMS’s contributions will focus on high frequency HBT characterization.

Role:

In X-TREME 6G, Northern Europe’s technological excellence is embodied by our partner DTU – Technical University of Denmark.

The technical university of Denmark is one of the highest ranked technical universities in Europe renowned for its business-oriented approach, focus on sustainability and amazing study environment. 11.200 students are enrolled in one of DTU’s study programmes, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Master of Science in Engineering and PhD. DTU is represented by the Department of Space Research and Technology (DTU Space) through the Electromagnetic Systems division. The division of Electromagnetic Systems deals with antennas and microwave technology, components and circuits from the lower RF frequency range to terahertz. In X-TREME 6G, the university’s contribution will focus on sub terahertz electronics using InP DHBT technology.

Role:

p-NET’s mission is to develop technological solutions and innovative interventions leading to exportable products and services of high added value, while capitalizing on the strengths and potential of the Greek ICT ecosystem. Synergies and cross-fertilization between industry, academia and civil society drive the Center’s R&I efforts and the creation of positive societal, economic, and environmental impact. p-NET’s expertise includes advanced network infrastructure, experimentation, technology solutions, upskilling, consulting, and mentoring for startups.

In X-TREME 6G, p-NET aims to leverage the outcomes of X-TREME 6G by introducing innovative 6G functionalities and related microelectronic subsystems into its service offerings, making them accessible to a range of vertical applications though its service catalog. In line with X-TREME 6G objectives, p-NET plans to adopt an open and modular architecture to enhance flexibility and integration moving forward to the 6G era.

Role:

Established 1964, in Patras, Greece, UPAT counts 720 faculty members, 1600 researchers, 50k undergraduate students, 2k graduate students and 2.2k PhD candidates.

In X-TREME 6G, UPAT’s efforts will mostly focus on the development of AI/ML algorithms for 6G baseband processing, Self-Interference cancellation and RF impairments mitigation, hardware acceleration of 6G baseband extensions, and on the development & implementation of a flexible virtualizable RISC-V based architecture supporting efficient baseband extensions.

Role:

With more than 40 000 students and more than 150 years of history, POLIMI distinguishes itself as one of the top technical universities in Europe. The Broadband Optical Networks, Security, and Artificial Intelligence (BONSAI Lab PoliMi) lab is hosted at the department of electronics, information and bioengineering (DEIB) of POLIMI and has more than two decades of experience in telecom network management and optimization.

BONSAI’s upcoming contributions to X-TREME 6G let us envision ground breaking outcomes. Those contributions should focus on Network as a Sensor, a field where POLIMI counts some of the most-skilled specialists in Europe and beyond.

Role:

X-TREME 6G’s affiliated partner, ETHZ, lists 21 Nobel prizes for researchers who have or had a connection with this institution, and envisions to “serve society by educating the next generations of critical and creative thinkers and engaged citizens”, aka its more than 25 000 students.

ETHZ’s contributions to X-TREME 6G will mostly focus on the design and realization of Q/V band beam for SatCom application, on the development of NTN-testbed, and of algorithms and hardware accelerators for beam acquisition and tracking.

Role:

As a startup created by ETHZ, another of our partners, Argus space ambitions to become a leading supplier of radio-frequency/millimeter-wave electronics solutions for SATCOM, radars, 5G, and 6G.

In X-TREME 6G, Argus Space’s contribution will focus on demonstrating an NTN compliant phased array system with calibration and fast beamforming in K and Q/V-bands.

Role:

Founded in 2009 and operating from Prague, AMIRES has proven its expertise in the management of R&D&I projects, especially under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme, for which AMIRES has been part of more than 30 projects.

In X-TREME 6G, AMIRES is responsible for communication and dissemination activities, as well as project management and coordination support.
