Key takeaways from our exploitation plan – from research to results, results to impact, impact to progress

In October 2025, our partners from Nokia Italy worked on the set up of X-TREME 6G’s initial exploitation plan. This document, which is confidential, but of which we can however present the big lines and main orientations, paves the way for how X-TREME 6G’s results could be invested and used in the future, across sectors of the European economy, to address the needs of both the market and society. Here are the main takeaways of this strategy:

Results

X-TREME 6G’s exploitation plan lets us identify results that fit into the three following categories:

  • Technology – the results that translate into concrete technological components, or advancements for pre-existing technological components and processes.
  • Knowledge and cooperation – the know-how, expertise, insights, and cooperation schemes generated by the project’s activities in the fields that constitute the European 6G ecosystem.
  • Sovereignty and competitiveness – the enhancement of Europe’s positioning within the global 6G ecosystem through the achievement of X-TREME 6G’s objectives and results.

Technology

X-TREME 6G’s activities will lead to the production of new technological components and processes through the achievement of the project’s objectives. First of all, the project’s efforts will lead to the production of a new generation of SiGe BiCMOs technology, as well as HBT transistors, paving the way towards the emergence of a single and scalable technology hardware platform, to eventually support the deployment of 6G in Europe. Among other concrete positive spillovers, this new generation technology will allow for increased wafer output and die production capacity.

The activities conducted within the project will also allow for significant improvements of current radio solution for telecommunication in the THz bands. In addition, efforts conducted as part of the demonstration of the Network as a Sensor (NaS) use case will lead to the development of new turnkey solutions, opening the way for first effects of NaS technology in Europe by 2028, and supporting the objectives of starting 6G deployment in Europe by 2030; an upcoming deployment which will be greatly supported by the demonstration of X-TREME 6G’s use cases (Wireless X-Haul; JCAS; NaS; NTN; Private 6G networks), leading to the early-stage validation of potential 6G technologies in real-world conditions.

The results achieved as part of the demonstration of X-TREME 6G’s Joint Communication and Sensing (JCAS) use case will also lead to the development of key advancements for RADAR technology, with innovative applications in industrial automative and overall Radar equipment.

  • Security, defense and aerospace

Telecommunications

X-TREME 6G is a project at the intersection of microelectronics and telecommunication, paving the way for the deployment of 6G in Europe. Therefore, actors from the overall telecommunication sector constitute the principal target of the project’s results. Among those actors, the exploitation plan mentions the telecom industrial infrastructure owners supporting 6G mmWave and sub-THz frequencies up do 300 GHz; the satcom infrastructures owners and developers, the telecom, wireless and optic infrastructure equipment providers; the wireless back-hauling providers; the MNOs providing a complete solution including equipment, software and services to ensure connectivity; network operators, and mobile network operators. The presence within the project’s consortium of major telecommunication companies, such as Nokia and Orange, will surely facilitate the targeting of those above-mentioned actors, who, by integrating X-TREME 6G’s results at the heart of their processes, will contribute to achieving the project’s ultimate goal – 6G deployment in Europe.

Automotive and transportation sectors

X-TREME 6G’s activities linked to the demonstration of JCAS as a 6G use case will lead to significant advancements in RADAR technology, which would be of great use for actors from the automotive industry and transportation sectors. As such, Automotive connectivity solution developers/providers; automotive radar systems developers/providers; and automotive OEMs constitute key targets for X-TREME 6G’s upcoming results, whose positive impact will shine beyond the mere field of 6G.

Scientific, research and academic communities

X-TREME 6G is a project that gathers a significant number of renowned European research and academic institutions. The collaboration between the companies and the universities that constitute the project’s consortium will lead to the enrichment and production of knowledge, which will greatly benefit the upcoming activities of European scientists and researchers who, in each of their respective spheres of expertise, contribute to deepening Europe’s knowledge on connectivity. The publication in open access of papers, reports, standards, and their teaching to students from all ages and levels across European research centers and universities will greatly benefit other institutions that are external to X-TREME 6G’s work structure. As such, the world of European Research and Academia constitute a significant target for X-TREME 6G’s upcoming results.

Foreseen socioenvironmental impact

X-TREME 6G’s exploitation plan envisions a socioenvironmental impact of the project that is mainly articulated around the following categories:

  • Energy efficiency and environmental adaptation
  • Connectivity and inclusion
  • Security and sovereignty

Energy efficiency and environmental adaptation

Energy efficiency constitutes X-TREME 6G’s key positive environmental impact, as shown in the project’s exploitation plan. Indeed, the new generation hardware technology aimed at supporting 6G deployment in Europe that will be developed within X-TREME 6G should support infrastructures that will conjugate low power-consumption and high performance, in support with international sustainability objectives. Such infrastructures would appear to be especially beneficial in the light of AI technology development, which requires important speed and coverage from an infrastructural point of view, and whose impact on energy consumption needs to be minimized.

Furthermore, the results of the activities conducted within the demonstration of NaS as a 6G use case, centered on environmental sensing and weather prediction, will lead to improved environment monitoring capabilities, which in turn will pave the way for a better optimization of energy consumption and allocation, depending on predicted weather patterns.

Connectivity and Inclusion

X-TREME 6G is all about connectivity. As shown in the project’s exploitation plan, this connectivity-centered approach will lead to positive societal impact in terms of inclusion. Indeed, 6G will offer increased potential in connecting remote areas and their populations, through the development of telecommunication infrastructures that will be able to ensure a broader coverage, and that will be better equipped to face hostile environmental conditions. The work conducted as part of the demonstration of NTN as a 6G use case, per example, will pave the way for the development of network coverage infrastructures who, through the investment of space, will facilitate the connectivity of Islands, isolated villages, and mountainous areas; but also of places affected by sudden environmental disasters, or armed conflicts – increasing chances for maintaining communication, and guaranteeing rescue activities for the latter case.

Security and Sovereignty

X-TREME 6G will also contribute to the securitization of data and traffic, guaranteeing European companies and individuals with the conditions necessary to the privacy of their communications and operations. The work conducted within the demonstration of private 6G networks as 6G use case will go specifically in this direction.

X-TREME 6G, through its dedication to making of Europe a key actor for 6G deployment, in accordance with a set of sociopolitical principles grounded in growth, competitiveness, sustainability, inclusion and security, will take part in safeguarding Europe’s sovereignty over key enabling technology – a very important dimension in today’s world, marked by multiple conflicts and ongoing hostility.
